Why Being "The Best" Quietly Kills Many Firms
Freedom Firm Insider #017
I’ve never had a client say “I’m the best-kept secret in my industry” with pride.
Not once.
They say it with frustration.
Sometimes anger.
There’s a bitterness to it.
They’ve been waiting years for the market to notice.
It hasn’t.
Being the best-kept secret isn’t bad luck.
It’s a disease.
I call it Best-Kept Secret Syndrome.
And if you have it, it’s killing your business.
The Paradox Nobody Talks About
Here’s what I’ve learned helping hundreds of founders grow their firms:
The better you are at delivery, the less time you have to be visible.
Read that again.
You’re excellent.
Clients love you.
They refer friends.
You stay busy.
You stay heads-down.
And because you’re so busy serving—you never step back to lead.
To write.
To speak.
To build a body of work.
Being great at your craft becomes a trap.
The market doesn’t reward the best.
It rewards the known.
That’s not fair. But it is true.
I know because I lived it.
How I Got Trapped
For years, I was so focused on delivery I barely had time to breathe.
And it cost me.
Every new client took the same effort as the last.
No leverage.
No compounding.
Revenue stayed flat.
Energy went down.
Then I started publishing books.
Everything shifted.
Revenue went up.
But here’s what mattered more:
my income per hour invested went up dramatically.
The leverage I needed wasn’t in working harder.
It was in becoming known.
Books gave me that.
When you’re visible, everything is easier.
When you’re invisible, everything is a grind.
What Visibility Actually Creates
Let me give you a concrete example.
My clients Kim and Lisa Hazen noticed how “microcultures” were destroying biopharma companies from the inside-out.
Kim and Lisa are phenomenal at what they do.
But their talent for transforming company culture was largely unknown.
Classic Best-Kept Secret Syndrome.
Then they published Culture Shock – How Microcultures Destroy Biopharma Companies from Within–And How You Can Stop It.
Within weeks, the HR community in Boston noticed them.
For the first time.
In a big way.
People started sharing their content.
Speaking invitations arrived.
Multiple five-figure engagements followed.
Not in months.
In weeks.
Same expertise.
Same people.
The only difference?
They became visible.
The Visibility Multiplier
Visibility isn’t vanity.
It’s a multiplier.
When you’re visible:
Prospects come pre-sold
You command premium pricing
Referrals carry more weight
Speaking invitations arrive
Credibility compounds
When you’re invisible:
Every sale starts from scratch
Price becomes the differentiator
You compete with everyone who looks “similar”
You live in “feast or famine” mode
Invisible experts get commoditized.
Visible ones get chosen.
The math isn’t close.
The Cure
Here’s the non-obvious truth:
You’re not unknown because you’re not good enough.
You’re unknown because you’ve been too good at delivery to invest in discovery.
Best-Kept Secret Syndrome has a cure:
1. Extract your expertise into a book.
Not for vanity. For leverage.
A book works 24/7.
It enters rooms you’ll never see.
2. Treat visibility as a deliverable.
Block time for it. Hire help if needed.
It’s not “nice to have.”
It’s infrastructure.
3. Choose authority over anonymity. Every time.
Kim and Lisa didn’t get better at their craft when they published.
They just stopped hiding their genius.
The Split
The market is splitting.
On one side:
Firms where the founder does excellent work. But nobody knows.
They compete on price.
They grind for every client.
They wonder why the market doesn’t “get it.”
They have Best-Kept Secret Syndrome. And they’re dying from it.
On the other side:
Firms where the founder is visible.
The book is working.
Clients come pre-sold.
Revenue compounds.
Same expertise.
Different outcome.
One side builds wealth.
The other builds a job they can never escape.
Which side are you building?
