The Invisible Asset
Freedom Firm Insider #016
In 2014, I was a solo consultant with a part-time assistant and a handful of local clients in Tallahassee, Florida.
I was good at what I did.
My clients got results.
But nobody outside my little corner of the world knew I existed.
Then I published Unstoppable Referrals.
Within a week—one week—prospects started reaching out from across the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Europe, and Australia.
I was the same person.
My ideas were the same.
Nothing about my expertise had changed.
But two things shifted completely:
First, when I packaged those ideas in a book, the world took them seriously. The same insights I’d been sharing for years suddenly carried weight. They were seen as authoritative.
Second, I gained leverage. Before the book, my ideas were trapped inside me. I had to deliver them personally, in-person one conversation at a time, and online buried in an endless thread of social media posts that disappeared within hours.
The book set them free.
My business doubled in each of the next two years.
And it’s continued to grow ever since.
Here’s the part that amazes me:
I still get clients from that book.
Eleven years after launch.
The Invisible Expertise Problem
Here’s what most professionals don’t understand:
Being good at what you do is not enough.
It hasn’t been enough for a while.
But in 2026, it’s becoming dangerous.
AI has leveled the playing field of appearing competent.
Everyone’s website looks polished.
Everyone’s proposals sound smart.
Everyone can spew “thought-leadership” content.
Your prospects can’t tell the difference between you—with 20 years of hard-won expertise—and someone who just asked ChatGPT to write their LinkedIn posts.
The market is flooded with people who look like experts.
Your expertise is real. But it’s invisible.
And invisible expertise is worthless in a market where AI makes everyone look the same.
What a Book Actually Does
A book isn’t a business card. It’s not a “nice to have” for your credibility.
It’s an asset that fundamentally changes how the market sees you.
I hear this from virtually every client we work with:
“People see me differently now.”
“I have more status. More authority.”
“My recommendations are accepted, not questioned.”
“Prospects don’t compare me to competitors anymore. I stand alone.”
That last one is the key.
When someone reads your book, they’re not comparison shopping.
They’re not weighing you against three other options.
They’ve already decided you’re the one—they’re just figuring out how to work with you.
That’s the power of authorship.
Why This Is AI-Proof
Increasingly, we humans are developing ”AI content” detectors.
And we don’t want to know what AI thinks (we have ChatGPT for that)…
If we’re reading YOUR book we want to know what YOU THINK!
A book with your unique take on your field is proof.
Proof that you’ve done the thinking.
Proof that you have a point of view worth 200 pages.
Proof that you’re not just another robot voice in the noise.
And unlike a social post that disappears in 24 hours, a book compounds.
It keeps working while you sleep.
It keeps positioning you while you’re serving clients.
It keeps attracting the right people years—even decades—after you publish.
It’s not content.
It’s an asset.
The Gap Is Widening
Here’s what I’m seeing:
In 24 months, the gap between “known experts” and “best-kept secrets” will become unbridgeable.
The known experts will command premium fees.
They’ll attract the best clients—the ones who don’t negotiate, who trust their recommendations, who refer others without being asked.
The best-kept secrets will fight for scraps.
They’ll compete on price.
They’ll wonder why less-talented competitors are winning deals they should have won.
AI is accelerating this split.
Visibility compounds. So does obscurity.
Every month you stay invisible is a month the gap widens.
The Question
You have expertise.
You have a methodology.
You have a point of view
It’s taken years to develop.
Is it visible?
Or is it trapped inside you—buried in conversations, scattered across social posts, locked in your head where it can’t do its job?
Being good isn’t enough anymore.
In 2026, the professionals who win will be the ones who are known.
The rest will wonder what happened.
See you next Saturday,
